Nrithyakhshethra, a renowned school of dance in Kochi, Kerala, is marking a significant milestone – its 25th anniversary. Founded in 2000 by the illustrious Mohiniyattam exponent, Smt. Sreedevi Rajan, this institution has been a beacon for classical dance enthusiasts, offering training and performances in Mohiniyattam and Bharatanatyam.
A legacy of dance
Sreedevi Rajan, daughter of the legendary Kathakali performer, Padmasree Kalamandalam Krishnan Nair, and the revered 'Mother of Mohiniyattam', Guru Kalamandalam Kalyanikutti Amma, brought her vast experience and passion to Nrithyakshethra. She started the dance school after retiring from her role as a dance teacher at Cochin Refineries' school. The institution has been nurtured and taken to new heights by her daughter Sandhya Rajan who has been an integral part of it since its inception.
Sandhya's artistic journey began at the age of four, trained in Mohiniyattam and Bharatanatyam under the guidance of her grandmother, Guru Kalamandalam Kalyanikutti Amma, and her mother, Sreedevi Rajan. She also received training in Kathakali from her grandfather, Guru Padmasree Kalamandalam Krishnan Nair. Her aunt, Kala Vijayan, was her guru in Bharathanatyam and learned Kuchipudi from Guru Kalamandalam Mohana Thulasi. Additionally, Sandhya holds a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Mohiniyattam from R.L.V. College of Music and Fine Arts, Thripunithura, and has served as a lecturer in Mohiniyattam in the same college.
Celebrating 25 years
Under Sandhya's guidance, Nrithyakshethra has flourished, with over 400 students currently enrolled. According to Sandhya Rajan, the institution has delivered nearly 3500 hours of dance programs to date with over 1000 students trained, till date. Nrithyakshethra continues to provide high-quality training in Mohiniyattam and Bharatanatyam.
To commemorate its silver jubilee, Nrithyakshethra presents Nritya '25, a two-day event featuring performances by renowned dancers. The highlight of the event is a performance by Padma Bhushan Shobana on September 28, 2025, followed by a showcase of Nrithyakshethra's students on September 29, 2025, at the Fine Arts Hall in Kochi. This celebration promises to be a testament to the institution's dedication to preserving and promoting classical dance forms.
